I have been managing diabetes since 2010 with an A1C in the double digits for over a decade. I have struggled with my diet, weight, sleep habits, blood sugar levels, and maintaining a positive outlook. I tried a variety of strategies that were unsuccessful, however, ironically, the pandemic was the catalyst to get my health back on track. During COVID, I connected with the Walk with a Doc program and started walking in local parks and made small, realistic, attainable goals over time. Gradually the weight came off, I was sleeping better, and my diabetes became much more well controlled. As of today, I am proud to share that I am thriving with a healthier lifestyle, eating better, focusing on wellness and self-care, and maintaining an A1C between 5 to 6. I am motivated by movement and happy to share my wellness journey with those impacted by diabetes.

At this time, I am volunteering my time, energy, and effort with the upcoming Step Out® Walk: Atlanta, at Atlantic Station, assisting with securing sponsors and donations. It has been a rewarding yet daunting and humbling experience. It is never easy to ask for funding; however, when I share how much their funding will impact so many people suffering from diabetes like myself, my efforts are much more worthwhile. I have even created my own Step Out Walk: Atlanta fundraising page to generate support for the ADA. I am proud to be a Diabetes Advocate and a Diabetes Warrior for the cause, which is critical for obtaining funding for research, diabetes prevention efforts, and community outreach.
