2021 marks 30 years of living with diabetes. When I was diagnosed at 10 years old it was such a different time and I didn’t have the same tools that others so readily have available today. Regardless, transitioning to life with diabetes can be hard and isolating. Luckily, with the help of a neighbor with Type 2 diabetes and a youth camp, I learned much about diabetes and the importance of being in control of my health.

Early on, I struggled to stay on top of my diabetes. I was burnt out and, as a result, my diabetes and eye health suffered. Ironically, I was diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy during Healthy Vision Month and needed surgery. This was a massive wake-up call! As a father of three, including one daughter living with Type 1 diabetes, my health is of the utmost importance to me. I now know the impact of my diabetes on my vision. Today, I partner closely with my diabetes care team to ensure I am on top of my diabetes and my eye health. This includes seeing an ophthalmologist regularly and getting annual dilated eye exams.

I’m fortunate to have the support of my family and friends, my diabetes care team, and the Focus on Diabetes™ initiative as I continue my journey to better health!
