New Report: The American Diabetes Association Highlights Diabetes Research Advances and Achievements

Today, the American Diabetes Association® (ADA) released its 2024 Research Report. The report highlights the organization's investment in advancing diabetes research and clinical practice. Through research grants, the ADA is furthering high-impact, innovative projects and supporting researchers in establishing collaborative networks to move their innovations into the hands of people living with diabetes.  

“Research is the cornerstone of advancing the mission of the ADA to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. By leading innovative studies and funding cutting-edge science, we aim to prevent, treat, and ultimately cure diabetes on a global scale, fostering hope and delivering transformative breakthroughs,” said Charles “Chuck” Henderson, the ADA’s chief executive officer.  

The report highlights include: 

  • Research grants to: 
    • Tackle the epidemic of youth-onset type 2 diabetes 
    • Improve the lives of women with diabetes across the lifespan 
    • Support the psychological and emotional needs of people with diabetes 
  • Investment in early career researchers through funding opportunities for postdoctoral fellowship awards to ensure these researchers can stay within the field of diabetes 
  • Takeaways from the 84th Scientific Sessions, where researchers from all over the world shared the latest progress and study results with the global diabetes community 
  • Active research projects seeking to: 
    • Target precision medicine for improved outcomes 
    • Decrease diabetes stigma through purposeful language  
    • Develop individually tailored diabetes self-management education options 
    • Build community support for diabetes prevention  

In addition, the report provides an update on the Pathway to Stop Diabetes® (Pathway) program, which pairs talented early-career scientists with mentorship from world-renowned diabetes scientists to drive research innovation free from traditional project constraints. This year, through the Pathway program, the ADA dedicated over $6.1 million in new grant funding to support breakthroughs in translation and clinical science, technology, care, and potential cures in the field of diabetes.
